When helping others with their negative thoughts, make sure those thoughts are genuinely negative.

Updated: Jan 1

I have a friend that for all of us will correct when we say something negative about ourselves. I admire that they can use their voice so strongly.

I am grateful they have caused me to pay greater attention when I speak, and daily allow me to become a better version of myself.

Most of the time when they correct me, I pause, I imagine I look a little like the RCA Victor dog for a second, then I correct my words, we all kind of do that now whether they are around or not, they have impacted my, and our lives for the positive.

There is one thing I say, and they correct, that has hurt me from the first time, yet, if asked I would not have been able to explain why. When I use the phrase they would correct me and I would feel hurt, frustrated, and frankly confused. I didn't understand why THIS correction bothered me so much. I knew I couldn't explain more than my feelings were hurt, so I didn't bother to try.

Today I was watching something and it clicked.

The phrase I say that they correct: I am old.

They respond, "Don't talk about my friend like that."

WHY is that a negative that needs correcting?

Hear me out.

The average female lives to 80, making 30-50 middle age, meaning 60 would be what?

Old.

I am certainly not young.

I FEEL past middle aged.

I'm not elderly.

I'm old.

By the numbers I am old.

Why do you see that as a negative or something I need to stop saying?

PS. I stopped saying I was decrepit, I'd say that is a win, wouldn't you?

THIS is the video that sparked understanding:
